Biography

Research interests: comparative politics; ethnic politics; ethnic conflict; nationalism; democratic change; natural resources; inequality; Southeast Asia. He is the author of ‘Winning by Process: The State and Neutralization of Ethnic Minorities in Myanmar’ (Cornell University Press, 2022); ‘Democracy and Nationalism in Southeast Asia: From Secessionist Mobilization to Conflict Resolution’ (Cambridge University Press, 2021); ‘Political Change in Southeast Asia’ (Cambridge University Press, 2013) and ‘Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict in Indonesia’ (Cambridge University Press, 2004), as well as co-editor of ‘Democratization and Ethnic Minorities: Conflict or Compromise’ (Routledge, 2014) and ‘Multination States in Asia’ (Cambridge University Press, 2010). He has also published several articles and book chapters.
