Themes in European Politics
Themes
The course is an introduction to some broad comparative themes in European Politics and has three major components. First, it provides an overview of domestic institutions, party systems, and social cleavages in the major European states and how they shape politics. Second, the course examines how public policy and policy outcomes vary (or not) across the states (for example, in social, economic, or immigration policy). Third, we consider the role these states play in European integration and how European democracies respond to global challenges. The class is theory-driven and uses major paradigms in political science in order to facilitate the understanding of particular countries such as France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
