Democracy and Dictatorship
Themes
This course examines the origins of democracy and dictatorship. We explore how authoritarian regimes come to power, the strategies and institutions they employ to survive, the key actors within them, how they end, and what follows them. We also study transitions from authoritarian rule and their various outcomes. Why does democracy emerge and survive in some countries but not others? Why do certain democracies experience democratic backsliding or erosion? Throughout this course, we cover both historical and contemporary examples from across the world.
