Women in Western Political Thought
Themes
This course explores how women contributed to the development of central debates in the history of political thought, including debates about friendship, equality, freedom, and authority. The course will cover writings on women by ‘canonical’ political thinkers such as Aristotle, Niccolò Machiavelli, Michel de Montaigne, and Thomas Hobbes; as well as their female interlocutors such as Lucrezia Marianella, Margaret Cavendish, Marie de Gournay, Mary Astell, and Gabrielle Suchon.
