Democracy and Representation in Canada

Themes

The goal of this course is to familiarize students with the concept and practice of democratic representation as viewed through the lens of Canadian parliamentary institutions. Part 1 of the course covers theories of representation. Part 2 applies these theories to the major institutions of representative government in Canada, including Parliament, the electoral system, and political parties. Part 3 focuses how women, regions, and Indigenous peoples are represented in the practice of Canadian politics. This course will familiarize students with theories of representation and the functioning of key representative institutions in Canada.
