Topics in Political Thought I
Rousseau's Constitutional Projects
Themes
This course will explore both the links and disjunctures between Rousseau’s theoretical discussions in the Social Contract and Discourse on Political Economy and his more practical discussion of particular constitutional projects, most notably those of Corsica and Poland. We will explore aspects of Rousseau’s work in its historical context, and make use of some of the resources in the Thomas Fisher Rare Books Library in seeking to build a picture of relevant contemporary debates that helped to inform Rousseau’s work.
