The Political Theory of G.W.F. Hegel
Themes
A study of Hegel's political philosophy through a reading of the Philosophy of Right and of a substantial part of the Phenomenology of Spirit. While the course will be primarily devoted to a close reading of these texts, several general themes will also be discussed, including Hegel's understanding of the relationship between philosophic knowledge and the state, his understanding of the relationship between the ancient and modern worlds, his differences with Kant on the status of law and political life, and his place with respect to the tradition of liberal political theory.
