Global Urban Politics

Themes

Major cities in the South have become intimately involved in a much more globalized world. The focus of this course is the political response of Latin American, African, Middle Eastern, and Asian cities to major challenges: local institutions attempting to attract global capital, contesting notions around decentralization, the impact of Mega Projects on municipal government and the environment, issues of violence, and policy confronting fluidity in law and economy. Throughout the course, we will ask how cities operate in this new globalized arena shaped by contestations over local values and democratic culture. The course includes an Urban Politics Game, and several films documentaries to help engage these issues.
