Themes

Broadly, this course investigates the structure and function of public international law. The topics to be covered include: sources of international law (IL); IL theory and analytical perspectives; international environmental law; the global commons; recognition of states and governments; customs and treaties; acquisition of territory and territorial rights; nationality and citizenship; state responsibility; regional courts and international criminal tribunals; laws of war; humanitarian intervention and the use of force. Particular consideration is given to the ways in which international law impacts and/or influences international relations, global governance and the development of international society (or a society of states).
