Comparative Public Policy

Themes

This lecture course draws from theoretical and empirical works on public policy in the advanced industrial countries and examines the politics of policymaking and change in both the developed and developing worlds. Students will investigate how authoritarianism, democratization and globalization affect policy processes and reform in a range of developed and developing world countries, including in East Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Africa. Policy areas include industrial policy, technology, disaster management, welfare policy and post-material issue areas such as environmentalism and family policy.

Format and Requirements

This course requires that students engage in classroom discussion. There are no examinations in this course. The final grade is determined on the basis of the following: three short essays (60%) and a final term paper (40%).
