Politics in Europe

Themes

This course applies the basic concepts in comparativepolitics to the political systems of Europe. We will covertheories of transitions to democracy, formation anddevelopment of the nation-state, political institutions and theireffects, parties and party systems and elections and electoralbehaviour. We will use these theories to gain a betterunderstanding of politics in Europe. We will also addresssome of the major challenges that Europe and the EU haverecently faced such as the eurozone crisis, Brexit, the rise ofpopulism and extreme right parties and the challenges ofimmigration and incorporation of minorities. The goal is forstudents to become familiar with the politics andgovernments of contemporary Europe through the lens ofcurrent and classic themes in comparative politics.
