Enlarging Europe: The European Union and Its Applicants

Themes

European integration remains one of the most important and successful political experiments in recent history. This course looks at the historical impetus for European integration after the Second World War and to the recent trends in this process, as well as its future prospects as the Union’s borders enlarge and it confronts new challenges. Special focus is on the Balkans, the Caucasus, and Ukraine.

Format and Requirements

Mid-Term Opinion Essay (800-1000 words), Weekly reading responses, Final Take Home Essay (2500 words) and participation/attendance.

Preparation

Interest in European History and Politics.

1.0 credit in POL/ JPA/ JPF/ JPI/ JPR/ JPS/ JRA courses
