Plagues in Political Thought
Themes
In this seminar, we will read and discuss political thought and literature on the problem of plague, in conversation with some empirical work on epidemics past and present. What demands do widespread illness place on political institutions? How do they challenge our understandings of community and citizenship? We will analyze and evaluate different social and political responses to epidemics as they are described and theorized in these texts and consider what they teach us about how risk and disaster affect political communities. Readings may include work from Thucydides, Daniel Defoe, Albert Camus, José Saramago, and others.
Format and Requirements
