Themes

Political economy examines the relationship between the state and is economic and social setting in historical perspective. This course uses this lense to examine Canadian politics. It first reviews the classical literatures, including Innis, Mackintosh and Marxian perspectives, on Canadian political economy, and discusses the main historical phases in Canada’s political-economic development. The rest of the course treats contemporary issues by highlighting Canada’s distinctiveness in comparison with other affluent capitalist countries. These issues will include inequality and redistribution, macroeconomic and trade policies, and important variations among the provinces.
