First-Year Seminar
China in the World
Themes
This course examines what China, as an economic powerhouse and a rising hegemon, means to the world. We will look at what drives China’s foreign policy, domestic sources of its foreign policy, Sino-US relations, China’s relations with Northeast and Southeast Asia, and China’s engagement with regional and multilateral institutions, the politics of RMB devaluation, and what China’s rise means for the international systems.

Format and Requirements
One two-hour seminar per week, consisting of highly demanding student presentation and discussion. Students are expected to do the assigned readings before classes and to actively contribute to class discussions. Students MUST be prepared to invest time in class preparation and to actively participate in the seminar discussion.
