Global Urban Politics
Themes
Globalization can be defined in many ways, but at its core it connotes a rapid extension and intensification of relationships around the world, based on the movement of information, technology, labour and capital. As globalization always “takes place” somewhere, one key element of this multifaceted process is the increasingly important role that cities and city-regions are playing in social, political and economic spheres. This course examines patterns of urbanization in global perspective. It will introduce students to a variety of theories of urban politics and will focus on a number of critical urban issues including suburbanization, immigration, infrastructure, the environment, land, the local economy and governance
