Qualitative Methods in Political Research

Themes

This course surveys qualitative methods used in political science research. After briefly reviewing positivist and interpretivist research traditions, the course covers the ideal-typical and practical use of specific qualitative methods such as fieldwork, interviewing, archival research, focus group research, participant observation, ethnography, counterfactuals, discourse analysis, and multiple-methods approaches. Examples used will come from political science research and will speak directly to political science research.

Format and Requirements

Active participation in seminar discussions, close familiarity with readings, and analytic papers.
