Politics of Independent Ukraine

As Ukraine attempts to build a viable, strong nation-state, the question of national identity within the nation-state building project affects both the internal politics of the state as well as its foreign policy outlook. This course will explore the internal and external dimensions of nation-building in Ukraine in comparison with processes taking place in other communist successor states. In the course, we will examine theories of nationalism and national identity, and apply them to Ukraine and other post-communist states. In addition, we will explore how Ukraine and the other CIS members are attempting to define themselves within the broader post-Soviet geopolitical space, in the contemporary search for identity in the context of the European Union and NATO.
