Topics in Canadian Politics I

Change and Continuity in Canadian Electoral Politics

Themes

Long term trends in Canadian electoral politics will be examined from the perspective of theories of realignment/dealignment and social change. Utilizing data from the Canadian election studies, we will assess the effect of social and economic forces in establishing continuities in Canadian electoral politics. We will also consider the ability of short term factors such as election campaigns, social media, or new issues and problems to disrupt or alter these. Following an analysis of elements that have shaped the contours of Canadian federal elections in recent years, particularly those of 2011 and 2015, we will consider the implications of the 2019 federal election campaign and election outcome for future electoral alignments in Canada.
