Topics in Comparative Politics V
Western and Central Europe in the 20th Century
Themes
The course will exam Paris, Vienna, Prague and Warsaw (or Krakow) under German occupation. The course will theorize the city as a unit of historical and social scientific analysis, and it will examine the key political actors and bureaucratic actors, and the formal structures of the National Socialist occupation. It will then take a thematic approach to the occupation: invasion and liberation, corruption, collaboration and resistance, gender, GLBT issues, prostitution, food and hunger, and the Jews. No background is required; the first two sessions will be devoted to a brief overview of early 20th century European history. (Given by the Department of Political Science and the Centre for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies)
