Topics in International Politics II

Alliance Politics in Theory and Practice


The course will study and assess major IR theories about alliances politics with a special focus on decision-making process. It will draw on historical and contemporary cases to study alliances formation, dissolution and effectiveness: European alliances in the 18 and 19th Centuries, Cold War Alliances, NATO and the European Union, Asian ententes will be reviewed.

Format and Requirements

This course is a seminar with heavy emphasis on discussion. The assignments include participation, critical memos on the readings and either two review essays or a research paper.
