Admission Requirements

POL Specialist, Major and Minor

The Specialist, Major and Minor programs in Political Science are Limited enrolment programs. Students may request these programs on ACORN after completing at least 4.0 credits and fulfilling the admission requirements.

There are two request periods for Limited programs. Please see details on the Faculty of Arts and Science website.

First Request Period

  • Students who complete the required courses during the 2023-2024 fall/winter session, may request the program between March 1 to April 26, 2024.
  • Results of these requests will be available on ACORN beginning April 27, 2024.
  • Students who have been given an INVITE status on ACORN must accept the program by July 5, 2024.
  • Students who fail to accept the Subject POSt before July 5th will forfeit their status and must re-apply during the second request period.

Second Request Period

  • Students who complete the required courses during the 2024 summer session, may request the program between July 6 and August 20, 2024.
  • Results of these requests will be available on ACORN beginning August 21, 2024.
  • Students who have been given an INVITE status on ACORN must accept the program before September 16, 2024.
  • Students who fail to accept the Subject POSt by September 16, 2024 will forfeit their status and must re-apply as of March 1, 2025.

Students transferring between the POL Minor and Major/Specialist programs must complete the program change on ACORN by the deadline specified for the two request periods.

Students switching between the POL Major and Specialist programs can use the “CHANGE” feature on ACORN to switch programs. The change option will be available from March 1 to April 26, 2024 and from July 6 to August 20, 2024.

Enrolment Requirements: Political Science Minor (ASMIN2015)

This is a limited enrolment program. Students must have completed 4.0 credits and meet the requirements listed below to enrol. 

Completed Courses (with minimum grades):

The following courses with the stated minimum grades are required for students who have completed 4.0 to 8.5 credits:

  • 1.0 credit from POL101H1, POL106H1, POL107H1, POL109H1 with a grade of 65% in each; or
  • 0.5 credit from POL101H1, POL106H1, POL107H1, POL109H1 with a grade of 65%, and 0.5 credit from POL 193H, POL194H1, POL195H1, POL196H1, POL197H1, POL198H1, MUN101H1, MUN102H1, TRN151Y1, TRN160Y1, TRN162Y1, TRN172Y1, VIC110H1, VIC121H1, VIC167H1, VIC168H1, VIC181H1, VIC183H1, VIC184H1, VIC185H1, WDW151H1, WDW152H1 with a grade of 65%

For students who have completed 9.0 or more credits:

  • 1.0 credit in POL, JPA, JPF, JPI, JPR, JPS, or JRA courses (excluding POL193H1, POL194H1, POL195H1, POL196H1, POL197H1, POL198H1) with a grade of 65% in each; or
  • 0.5 credit from POL, JPA, JPF, JPI, JPR, JPS, or JRA courses (excluding POL193H1, POL194H1, POL195H1, POL196H1, POL197H1, POL198H1) with a grade of 65%, and 0.5 credit from POL193H1, POL194H1, POL195H1, POL196H1, POL197H1, POL198H1, MUN101H1, MUN102H1, TRN151Y1, TRN160Y1, TRN162Y1, TRN172Y1, VIC110H1, VIC121H1, VIC167H1, VIC168H1, VIC181H1, VIC183H1, VIC184H1, VIC185H1, WDW151H1, WDW152H with a grade of 65%

Enrolment Requirements: Political Science Major (ASMAJ2015) & Political Science Specialist (ASSPE2015)

This is a limited enrolment program. Students must have completed 4.0 credits and meet the requirements listed below to enrol.

Completed courses (with minimum grades)

The following courses with the stated minimum grades are required for students who have completed 4.0 to 8.5 credits:

  • 1.0 credit from POL101H1, POL106H1, POL107H1, POL109H1 with a grade of 65% in each; or
  • 0.5 credit from POL101H1, POL106H1, POL107H1, POL109H1 with a grade of 65%, and 0.5 credit from POL193H1, POL194H1, POL195H1, POL196H1, POL197H1, POL198H1, MUN101H1, MUN102H1, TRN151Y1, TRN160Y1, TRN162Y1, TRN172Y1, VIC110H1, VIC121H1, VIC167H1, VIC168H1, VIC181H1, VIC183H1, VIC184H1, VIC185H1, WDW151H1, WDW152H1 with a grade of 65%.

For students who have completed 9.0 or more credits:

  • 2.0 credits in POL/ JPA/ JPF/ JPI/ JPR/ JPS/ JRA courses (excluding POL193H1, POL194H1, POL195H1, POL196H1, POL197H1, POL198H1) with a grade of 70% in each; or
  • 1.5 credits in POL/ JPA/ JPF/ JPI/ JPR/ JPS/ JRA courses (excluding POL193H1, POL194H1, POL195H1, POL196H1, POL197H1, POL198H1) with a grade of 70% in each, and 0.5 credit from POL193H1, POL194H1, POL195H1, POL196H1, POL197H1, POL198H1, MUN101H1, MUN102H1, TRN151Y1, TRN160Y1, TRN162Y1, TRN172Y1, VIC110H1, VIC121H1, VIC167H1, VIC168H1, VIC181H1, VIC183H1, VIC184H1, VIC185H1, WDW151H1, WDW152H1 with a grade of 70%.

Students in this program have the option to request enrolment in the Arts & Science Internship Program (ASIP) stream. Students can apply for the ASIP stream after Year 1 (Year 2 entry) or after Year 2 (Year 3 entry, starting Fall 2024). Full details about ASIP, including student eligibility, selection and enrolment, are available in the ASIP section of the Arts & Science Academic Calendar. Please note that the majority of students enter ASIP in Fall term of Year 2. Space is more limited for Year 3 entry. Students applying for Year 3 entry must have been admitted to the Political Science Specialist in the Summer after Year 2.
