Christian Bay (1921 – 1990)

He was, said former student Joe Fletcher, “a man as gentle and kindly as his scholarship was great.” These words express well the sentiments of many for Christian Bay, who died on May 6, following a lengthy illness. Christian joined the Department in 1972, having previously taught at Michigan State University, the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, and the University of Alberta. He enjoyed an international reputation, based on such books as The Structure of Freedom and Strategies of Political Emancipation, and numerous articles in professional journals. During his years in the Department, Christian taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of political philosophy and political psychology. In his teaching and graduate supervision, he imparted a vision of politics whose aim was to preserve and enhance human life. It was an inspiring vision, one that challenged us all, and one that will be deeply missed.
