Professor Antoinette Handley part of a panel on Education Partnerships between Canada and Africa

On April 22nd at Rideau Hall, Professor Antoinette Handley was part of a panel brought together by Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General to discuss Education Partnerships between Canada and Africa. The panel discussion was convened to mark the rollout of the Mastercard Foundation scholarships for students from Africa to three Canadian universities, including the University of Toronto.

Panelists considered the opportunities and challenges of enhancing cooperation between African and Canadian universities, and what it is that our institutions – and our students – can learn from each other.

The panel included (from left to right) Professor Stephen Toope, President and Vice-Chancellor, University of British Columbia and Chair of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada; Dr. James Mwangi, CEO and Managing Director, Equity Bank; Professor Handley; and Mr. Gerald Bareebe, Sauvé scholar and Ugandan journalist.

Gerald Bareebe is a Sauvé Scholar and investigative journalist working with The Daily Monitor, Uganda’s only independent daily newspaper. This fall Mr. Bareebe will be joining the Department of Political Science at U of T as a PhD candidate.

The panelists were joined by Ms. Reeta Roy, President and CEO of The MasterCard Foundation. The audience included Professor David Naylor, President of the University of Toronto and Professor Heather Munroe-Blum, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University. “The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program will develop next-generation leaders who will have a transformational impact in developing countries,” said Reeta Roy, President and CEO of The MasterCard Foundation.
