September 8, 2015

Professor Joseph Carens from the Department of Political Science at The University of Toronto, has been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) in recognition of his outstanding work as a leading intellectual and researcher. Election by their peers to the academies (Arts, Humanities and Sciences) is the highest honour a scholar can achieve.

The RSC website describes Professor Carens as ‘one of Canada’s most eminent political theorists and one of the world’s leading experts on the ethics of immigration. His distinctive philosophic approach to questions about liberalism, justice and political community has helped to define ‘the Canadian School’ of political theory. Methodologically innovative, Carens has elaborated a profoundly humane philosophy that seeks to reconcile the deep diversity of contemporary life with common citizenship’. On finding out about his election, Professor Carens commented “I appreciate the recognition of my work reflected in this selection.”

Founded in 1882, the Royal Society of Canada’s mission is to recognize scholarly, research and artistic excellence, to advise governments and organizations and to promote a culture of knowledge and innovation in Canada and with other national academies around the world.

This year saw 87 new Fellows elected, including one Foreign Fellow and three Specially Elected Fellows. New Fellows will be inducted to the academies during the Induction and Awards Ceremony on Friday, November 27, 2015 in Victoria, BC.
