Reinventing The Left In The Global South: The Politics Of The Possible

November 5, 2014

Please join us on Friday, November 14 for the next U of T Development Seminar on ‘The Politics of the Possible’. The event will be hosted by professor emeritus Richard Sandbrook.

The Politics of the Possible aims to present a fresh appraisal of the nature and significance of the democratic Left in the Global South. The book makes three related arguments: the Left’s emergent development paradigm is distinct even in relation to the “Post-Washington Consensus” that has appropriated many of the Left’s key terms; in important respects, the neoliberal development paradigm has failed, raising the issue of what the Left has to offer as an alternative; and the new Left includes parties and social movements that not only are avoiding the familiar pitfalls that ensnared socialists and social democrats in the twentieth century, but also are coping with the realities of the twenty-first century. In analyzing and illustrating three innovative progressive strategies, this study nudges the debate about the Left out of the well-worn grooves into which it has fallen in recent decades.

Commentaries will also be made by Frank Cunningham, professor emeritus philosophy and political science and Judith Teichman, professor of political science and international development studies.

The event will be held in Room 5017A (100 St. George Street).

Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/richard-sandbrook-reinventing-the-left-in-the-global-south-tickets-14081190219
