Front Cover_smallRecently the National Post published an article on the Syrian refugee crisis written by PhD candidate Craig Smith.

Last year Smith was an IDRC-funded Research Fellow at the Centre for Migration & Refugee Studies, American University of Cairo.

Smith had the following to say about the situation in Syria:

“The Syrian civil war has generated the worst population displacement crisis since the Second World War and the most rapid growth of the global refugee count since the tragic confluence of the Rwandan genocide and the breakup of Yugoslavia nearly 20 years ago. In mid-December, Antonio Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, appealed to the international community for an unprecedented $6.5-billion. The aid will provide crucial support to the 2.5 million refugees in the region, but will not solve their underlying protection needs.”
