Call for Papers: Contentious Politics in Egypt and Tunisia: Protest, Power, and Political Transformation

The Department is proud to announce that we will be co-sponsoring a conference which aims to examine contentious political issues surrounding Egypt and Tunisia.

The conference, titled: “Contentious Politics in Egypt and Tunisia: Protest, Power, and Political Transformation”, will be held at The University of Toronto and is scheduled for January, 2014.

The purpose of the conference is threefold:

• To strengthen networks and working relationships of scholars, students and specialists;
• To critically assess and compare the Egyptian and Tunisian revolts from a variety of disciplines, methodologies, and theoretical approaches; and
• To work towards publishing an edited volume of the keynote and paper presentations in order to further discussion, debate and dialogue among academic and professional communities on the successes of and obstacles to the Egyptian and Tunisian political transformations hitherto and looking forward.

Currently the conference organizers are accepting paper submissions which focus on one of the two major themes of the conference:

• From Protestors to Politicians: Mass Mobilization, Political Parry Formation, and Regime Change
• From Transition to Consolidation; Institutions, Constitutions, and Transitional Justice

If you would like to submit a proposal on one of the two aforementioned themes please send a paper proposal of no more than 500 words to Matt Gordner at matt.gordner@mail.utoronto.ca no later than September 15, 2013.
