Support for federal Tories waning, Liberals gaining steam: poll

The federal Conservatives have slipped from majority territory as the New Democrats continue to nip at the governing party’s heals, a new Harris/Decima poll of federal voting intentions reveals.

The poll, conducted from January 12-22, puts the Conservatives at 32 per cent support, followed by the NDP at 29 per cent. The Liberal Party, which held its 2012 convention in Ottawa two weeks ago in an attempt to rescue itself from permanent third-party status, is sitting at 25 per cent support. They are followed by the Green Party, at 7 per cent, and the Bloc Quebecois at 5 per cent.

“The Conservatives have the strongest core base, and there is a tussle going on between the NDP and the Liberals,” said Nelson Wiseman, a political science professor at the University of Toronto. “But my sense is that people aren’t really focused on the federal parties at the moment, so the answers they give don’t mean much.”
