Biography

Thilo’s research examines the relationship between utopia, justice, and social progress. His dissertation, The City Beyond Justice: A Normative Theory of Utopia, argues that utopias, understood as provisionally (and subjectively) desirable imaginary societies, are better guides to social progress than conventional theories of justice. Thilo develops a critical interpretation of Robert Nozick’s “framework for utopia” to explain how an egalitarian process of imagination, deliberation, and experimentation can reconcile utopia with value pluralism and epistemic uncertainty.
