Congratulations to professor emerita Sylvia Bashevkin, who has been named an officer of the order of Canada.

Professor Bashevkin is one of Canada’s top scholars of gender and politics. Among the first to study the obstacles facing women in public life, she analyzed the consequences of women’s political participation and has worked to broaden opportunities for diverse people to engage in politics.

"Members of the Order of Canada are builders of hope for a better future," Gov. Gen. Mary Simon said in a news release. "Each in their own way, they broaden the realm of possibilities and inspire others to continue pushing its boundaries. Thank you for your perseverance, fearless leadership and visionary spirit, and welcome to the Order of Canada.” 88 new appointments were announced in total, including one Companion, 24 Officers and 63 Members. Three appointments were promotions within the Order.

Established in 1967, more than 8,000 Canadians have been appointed to the country's highest order, recognizing people across all sectors of society who have made extraordinary and sustained contributions to our nation.
