Biography
Research interests: social mobilization, identity politics, qualitative methods, former USSR, Central Asia. Recent publications include Slow Anti-Americanism: Social Movements and Symbolic Politics in Central Asia (Stanford U. Press) and Paradox of Power: The Logics of State Weakness in Eurasia (U. Pittsburgh Press, co-edited with John Heathershaw).. Current projects include a study of authoritarianism in Central Asia and an interdisciplinary, collaborative project on the long-term effects of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, soon to be published by Oxford U. Press.
