United States Foreign Policy

Themes

The course will provide a detailed analysis of the forces that shape the foreign policy of the United States of America. It will begin with an examination of the constitutional basis for the making of foreign policy, followed by a brief overview of the changing patterns of U.S. involvement in global politics. We then turn to a detailed analysis of the factors that have influenced U.S. foreign policy, including political culture and the multitude of bureaucracies in the executive branch involved in the implementation of policy (department of state, department of defense, foreign economic bureaucracy, intelligence community etc.). The course concludes with a series of thematic (terrorism, international law and organization…) and regional case studies of U.S. foreign policy since World War II.
