Politics in Europe

Themes

This course provides an introduction to politics in Europe regarding both the political systems of major individual states as well as the European Union. The main aim is to enable students to understand how politics in different areas are shaped by the vastly different political systems and traditions of European countries, as well as to be able to understand and critically assess the process of European integration.

The main textbooks used are C. Hay and A. Menon, European Politics (Oxford University Press 2007), D. Dinan, Ever Closer Union (Lynne Rienner Publishers 2010), T. Diez and A. Wiener, European Integration Theory (Oxford University Press 2009).

Format and Requirements

Course assignments are two 2000-word research essays as well as a mid-term and a final test.
