Ethnic and Racial Violence

Themes

This course surveys contemporary cases of ethnic and racial violence, including cases of civil war, riots, genocide, and lynching. The course aims to familiarize students with the empirical and theoretical literatures from scholars, journalists, and regional experts. The focus of inquiry will be on the origins, dynamics, processes, and causes of violence. (Less attention will be paid to post-conflict issues, such as justice and reconciliation.)
