Topics in International Politics

Insurgency/ Counterinsurgency

Themes

This course examines irregular violent conflict between non-state actors or insurgents and state and state proxies or counterinsurgents in the post-WWII period. Using a combination of historical, social scientific, and normative analytical approaches, we will explore classic cases and doctrines of insurgency and counterinsurgency in anti-colonial and Cold War contexts. We will then proceed to investigate the impact of economic incentives, identity politics, and gender dynamics on these conflicts. The course concludes with an in depth focus on the complex strategic and ethical questions posed by terrorism, guerrilla warfare, and the “war on terror” in the contemporary era.
