Topics in Canadian Politics
Themes
The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of contemporary Quebec society and politics to students with little or no prior knowledge of Quebec. The course has two main parts: society and policy. The first part deals with various central themes of Quebec society, including nationalism, memory, the Quiet Revolution, the sovereignty movement, federalism, Indigenous peoples, and political parties. The second part concerns the actions of the Quebec state in the areas of language, diversity management, social policy, economic development, and international relations. As students are not assumed to read French, the mandatory readings are in English only. For bilingual students, readings in French will be recommended on an individual basis.
