Politics and Society in Latin America
Themes
This course presents a critical analysis of Latin American politics and society. Part I of the course focuses on the main themes of Latin American politics from the late nineteenth century to the present, providing a theoretical framework for the analysis of the region. The topics to be explored include: colonialism, state formation, economic development, globalization and US-Latin America relations, political culture, military-authoritarian regimes, democratization, the recent wave of leftist governments, civil society, ethnicity and race, and gender and sexuality. In Part II, the framework developed in Part I will be applied to a series of country case-studies (including Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, and Venezuela), highlighting the important elements of variation across different countries.
