Politics and Transformation of Asia-Pacific

Themes

The course provides a comparative analysis of selected political systems of East and Southeast Asia, with an emphasis on understanding political change and its relationship to the socio-economic transformation of the region. Particular attention is paid to the nature of political power and the character of the governing regimes of each country. Other related topics include nationalism, the cold war, economic development, and the shape of nascent regionalism drawing the countries closer together. Parts of the course use a multi-media approach for the presentation of class materials.

Format and Requirements

Lectures and tutorials. Mid-term (25%), two essays (20% each), final exam (25%); tutorial participation (10%).
