Themes
This course will investigate Augustine's unusual development of the republican political traditions he inherited from Cicero, Sallust, Livy, and other theorists of Roman civic virtue.

Augustine, City of God and Augustine, Political Writings.
Format and Requirements
One two-hour seminar per week. We will begin with some lectures on Harrington; seminars on Hobbes, Harrington, and potentially other 17th-century republican thinkers thereafter.
