Topics in Political Thought II

Plutarch’s Political Thought

Themes

We will analyse selections from Plutarch’s moral and historical writings to develop a broad view of the main lines of his political thought. Questions to be considered include Plutarch’s relationship to imperial political structures in general and the regime of Trajan in particular, Plutarch’s place in broader trends of Hellenistic thought including the nature of his Platonism, the interplay of character and structure in understanding political life and gender considerations in Plutarch’s work.
