Productive Cynics: How Satire Affects Millennial Political Participation in Canada

Biography

Erica is writing her dissertation on the relationship between satire and political participation among millennials in Canada. She was a SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholar, a Junior Fellow at Victoria College, a Northrop Frye Doctoral Fellow at Victoria College, a recipient of the Tom Easterbrook Graduate Scholarship in Communications and the Mass Media, and an Ontario Graduate Scholar. Erica developed and taught the University of Toronto’s first course on humour and politics, and she also has teaching experience in American politics, Canadian politics, and the media and politics. She has published in the Journal of Legislative Studies, Democratic Audit UK, the Michigan Journal of Public Affairs, Human Rights & Human Welfare, and the Yonsei Journal of International Studies. Prior to starting her doctoral studies, Erica worked as a policy analyst for the Ontario Public Service, with positions in the Cabinet Office, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, and the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration. Erica holds a Master’s Degree in International Studies from the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver, and a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Toronto.

Political satire; media and politics; political communication; youth political participation; civic engagement.
