Wednesday, September 5th
11:00 – 11:30 Discussion of combined elements of MA and PhD Programs (SS3130) w/Profs. Pauly, Bernstein, Jung, Carolynn Branton and Louis Tentsos

- Review of items in mailbox
- Registration/enrolment
- Email communication
11:30 – 12:15 PhD Orientation Session (Rm SS3037) w/Professor Bernstein and Carolynn Branton. Discussion of PhD program requirements including: course choices; major field exams; choosing a supervisor/thesis committee; thesis proposal; and importance of applying for external funding.
11:30 – 12:15 MA Orientation Session (Rm SS3130) w/Professor Jung and Louis Tentsos. Discussion of MA program requirements.
12:30 – 1:00 Introduction to Area Group Convenors (SS3130)
Professor Pauly will introduce faculty members convening each of the five major areas of research in the Department of Political Science.
1:00 – 2:00 Lunch Served (SS3130)
2:00 – 2:30 Welcome from GASPS Executive (SS3130)
The Graduate Association of Students in Political Science (“GASPS”) executive will welcome new students, introduce GASPS and the Area Groups representatives and announce the first meeting.
2:30 – 5:00 GASPS Campus tour (meet outside SS3130)
This exciting (and yet not too physically strenuous!) event will introduce incoming students, paired with upper-year students, to important points on campus. This tour will familiarize new students with the U of T campus and its amenities, while meeting current students and faculty.
5:30 – GASPS Meet & Greet at the GSU Pub (16 Bancroft Ave)
Thursday, September 6th
4:00 – 6:00 Wine and Cheese Reception for MA Students (SS3037)
All incoming MA students are invited to meet with faculty, students and staff.
Friday, September 7th
10:00 — 12:00 Student Life Panel Discussion (PhD Students in SS3037; MA Students in SS3130). Group of current students discuss various elements of academic and non-academic life at U of T.
12:30 – 2:00 T.A. Workshop 1: Orientation (SS3037)
w/T.A. Coordinator, Professor Jacques Bertrand and others. This workshop is the first in a series of three and it is mandatory for all first time teaching assistants. More details will be sent out regarding the TA orientation series of workshops closer to the beginning of term. (The dates and details for the subsequent workshops are tentatively 12:30 to 2pm, Sept 14 and 21. A light lunch will be served at each workshop.)
Monday, September 10th
4:00 — 6:00 Scholarship Seminar (SS3130)
w/Professor Bernstein and others: This seminar will review the procedures for applying for external awards such as SSHRC and OGS. The workshop is especially relevant to PhD students in the funded cohort. Once enrolled, all PhD students in the funded cohort must apply for external funding in order to be eligible for Departmental funding. The workshop will also be relevant to MA students who anticipate PhD studies following their completion of the MA program.
Friday, September 14th
6:00 — 9:30 New PhD and Faculty Dinner Reception
All incoming PhD students are invited to a dinner reception, at the Faculty Club. Invitations will be delivered to your mailbox.
Saturday, September 15th
12:00 — 5:00 Departmental Potluck Picnic — Dufferin Grove Park
Departmental reception for all faculty, graduate students and staff. Bring your favourite potluck dish, blanket, frisbee/soccer/baseball equipment, and a reusable cup (the department will provide plates and beverages).
Friday, September 21st
4:00 – 6:00 Beginning of Term Party (Croft Chapter House, University College)
Departmental reception for all faculty, graduate students and staff.
6:00 – onwards GASPS After Party Gathering (Location TBA)
All are welcome to gather at a local establishment to be announced at the Beginning of Term Party by a GASPS representative
