The Political Economy of International Trade

Themes

The course explains why countries trade by looking at historical and contemporary trends in international trade. We look at collective action problems at both the domestic and international level that impede the realization of free trade. In this context, we also consider how trade is connected to the state's capacity to fulfill other policy objectives, notably the protection of borders from military invasion, the environment from ozone and resource depletion, the workforce from overuse and abuse.

Format and Requirements

Class participation (30%), test (25%), and paper (45%).
