Topics in Comparative Politics I

Business and Politics

Themes

This course will examine the reciprocal relationship between business and government. We will review the ways that business can influence politics and policy making, and how politics and policy can shape business behavior. The course will discuss these topics from various theoretical angles, including a focus on diverse forms of business lobbying and corporate political activity at multiple political levels, business power, old and new forms of corporate social responsibility, and private regulation and governance. While we will mainly focus on developed countries, the course will also touch on topics related to business-state relations in developing countries. Throughout the course, we will pay close attention to the importance of research design, and to improving students’ research and writing skills.
