Democracy and Ethnic Conflict

Themes

In this course, we assess critically some of the major theories of nationalism and ethnic conflict. We discuss the particular challenges that nationalist movements and ethnic tensions create for democracy. We also discuss various institutional forms to manage ethnic diversity and reduce the potential for conflict. Topics include: the origins of nationalism; nationalism and democratization; sources of ethnic conflict; the institutional management of ethnic conflict; democratic institutions and ethnic diversity; multination states and democracy.
