Advanced Environmental Politics and Policy in Canada

Themes

This course will introduce students to a variety of political and policy design issues related to the environment. After starting with some theoretical ideas about the policy process and the environment we will spend the majority of our time considering different approaches by policy-makers to solving environmental problems, including command and control regulation, market-based policies, and alternatives. The course includes examination of some of the larger issues related to environmental policy in Canada, including oil sands, climate change, biodiversity, aquaculture, and Arctic development issues. Overarching themes in the course include negotiating federalism and understanding democracy in environmental policy, environmental justice, and the strengths/weaknesses of market-based policies.
