Civil War and Political Violence

Themes

The general theme of this course is to understand the origins, dynamics, and processes of political violence which observers often characterize and classify as “racial” or “ethnic” or “religious” in nature. In particular the course focuses on understanding one particular type of political violence, called civil wars or insurgencies, which is a conflict between a state and at least one armed non state actor within its territory.

Format and Requirements

Discussion-style format. Students are expected to do all readings before each class and contribute to class discussions each week. Assignments include in-class presentations, several short essays, and one research paper.
