Brexit ‘might lead to more integration’

Euro-skepticism, on the rise in many parts of the continent, was highlighted by the UK’s recent decision to exit the European Union. Carolina de Miguel Moyer, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Toronto spoke to The National Post saying, “What’s happening in Britain is not isolated and it’s not a coincidence. Many countries have the same problems in terms of having a sector of society that is disenchanted with the political class, that is hurting economically and that is finding some affinity with these nationalist, almost xenophobic and anti-European discourses.” A true Brexit though could actually be good for the future of the EU. The British, she said, have long been reluctant partners in Europe. They’ve slowed deeper continental ties, and even ground them to a halt at times. “I actually think in the long run it might lead to more integration,” she said. The full article is available here.
